1949 – 2018 Arnie Lowe passed away tragically on the 22nd of July 2018 at his home in Castleknock. His family, friends, colleagues, staff and clients were shocked and saddened to hear of his sudden death.

Arnie’s father James C. Lowe set up J. Connolly Lowe and Sons, Legal Costs Accountants in 1942. The Company later became Connolly Lowe, Legal Costs Accountants and was spearheaded by Arnold for over 32 years.

Arnie was a practicing Legal Costs Accountant for most of his adult working life but in his early days he previously had a number of Interesting jobs and hobbies:-

In the early ’70’s while working with his dad, Jim Lowe he ran a group called AQUA. They often played in the Crystal Ballroom and with groups such as the Love Affair.

Unknown by many he loved to rally and took part in many    events such as the Circuit of Ireland, Cork 20 and the Donegal Rally. He even built his own Ford Escort from a shell. Besides rallying he loved cars and was the proud owner of an original black Lotus Elan JPS.

But his main love was his Legal Costs.

He gained a considerable reputation as the “go to” Legal Costs expert in relation to the early Tribunals of Inquiry including the Whiddy Island Disaster, the Kerry Babies case, the Stardust Inquiry, the Beef Tribunal, the Tallaght Two and a number of others although he wasn’t impressed at all when the Irish Times called him “Arthur” Lowe on a couple of occasions in their reports on the Tribunal taxations!

Arnie was always interested in the latest gadgets. In fact the Inns Quay office was one of the first to have a fax machine… the downside being there was no one else to fax for quite some time. There were of course times when some devices conspired against him and on one occasion his electronic gates kept him a prisoner in his home for a spell!

There are more than a few Legal Costs Accountants around today who started out in Arnie’s office on Inns Quay. I daresay if we were to have a “reunion” of Connolly Lowe staff past and present we would have a very decent party.

His passing has been described on more than one occasion as “the end of an era” and to many of us it is…
